Well we all survived halloween! It has been a great day filled with class parties, parades in costumes, trunk-or-treat and way too much sugar!
This year for Halloween costumes, we all decided we wanted to do a family theme. But sticking down the right family theme was the difficult part. We talked about going as Avengers, Angry Birds, Harry Potter, but we finally settled on going as Star Wars characters and I'm so glad we did!
Here we are in all of our glory:
Miles chose to be Yoda. Leading up to Halloween he kept telling everyone he'd be Yoda...he was so excited. We even taught him to say, "Judge me by my size, do you?" It was pretty adorable!
For his costume, I wanted some really fun ears and after looking around, I wanted something crocheted. Only problem is I don't crochet, nor did I think I could teach myself how to make Yoda ears. So I purchased this amazing Yoda hat from
this Etsy shoppe. They are super soft and very well made, especially because our little Yoda liked to tug on those little ears. :) I bought his brown sweat pants and a tan t-shirt, both from Walmart and super cheap. For his robe and tunic, I used
this pattern. To cut down on some of the cost, we went to D.I. and purchased white sheets that I dyed with Rit dye before cutting and sewing. It was all super easy!
Bryleigh's costume was the easiest to put together...because I didn't make it! Haha! I didn't want to have to figure out how to do that headpiece, so we just bought the costume off Amazon. We used white face paint and red lipstick on her face.
She was trying so hard to be all serious like Queen Amidala is in the movies, but I caught her cracking a smile here. :)
Jeremy loves Darth (or as he says it, Dark) Vader. He even already had the helmet. For his costume, he wore a long sleeve black t-shirt and black pants. I made him a black tunic from the same
jedi robe pattern as I used on the other boys. His cape is a rectangle, hemmed around the edges with a casing for ribbon at the top. I cinched it up and tied it around his neck and he was good to go! I wanted him to wear a box like the real Darth Vader, so I found a box (it's actually from the post office) and painted it black. I looked at a picture of the real Vader's box and used white, blue and red paint for the rest of it. I used a black shoe string to loop it around his neck.
You better watch out, the force is strong with this one.
Ray got to be Obi-Wan Kenobi. I used the same
jedi robe pattern and tunic as Miles in opposite colors. He wore khaki pants and a tan colored shirt under it. In fact, I was able to use the same sheets on Ray and Miles' costumes, so that saved in the $$ department. I drew on his beard with brown eyeliner.
I chose to be Princess Leia. My dress is two white sheets sewn together, then I cut it out using the j
edi robe pattern again. Only thing is I didn't angle the arms into the body like the pattern, just did a straight line. I made a casing around the wrists and used elastic...which made the sleeves puffy, which I like. I hemmed the neck too. For my belt, I picked up a goldish color purse at the thrift store for $2 and cut it up. Since it wasn't that big around, I used gray elastic in the back.
I purchased the crochet brown hat and took it to the fabric store to find some brown yarn that matched so I could make my buns. I just twisted about six strands of yarn around and around until I had a bun, then glue gunned it down to the hat. It was so easy I loved the look of it! For my gun, I just spray painted one of our old water guns.
We had to have a Obi-Wan/Darth Vader duel on the bridge before we headed home.
We had our ward trunk-or-treat tonight so we decided to decorate our car to go along with our Star Wars theme and our trunk ended up taking 2nd place!
We just cut out cardboard that fit inside the back of the car and added twinkle lights to the top of it...to resemble the galaxy. I covered one of those big paper lanterns in tin foil and used a sharpie to draw lines on for the Death Star.
Earlier this week we painted two Star Wars pumpkins. I created R2D2 and Bryleigh made the Star Wars pumpkin. :) They are my favorite pumpkins we've ever made!
And best thing...we had the Star Wars and Darth Vader music playing...it was a hit! :)
It's been such a great halloween and I can't wait to figure out what we're going to be next year! Hope you had a happy halloween too!
